Out in the open: Members of the group enjoy the entertainment
The 22nd Wimbledon Cub Pack, which has its headquarters in Arthur Road, Motspur Park, has returned from a gloriously sunny weekend after taking 29 Cubs to their annual outdoor camp which, this year, was held at a Scout Campsite near Dorking with the theme of ‘circus’.
The Cubs arrived at site on the Friday evening to find their tents already pitched (courtesy of the leaders) in preparation for an evening of outdoor games to try to wear them out for a good night’s sleep (well, it was worth a try...)
Big splash
On the Saturday, the Cubs made giant catapult-type machines, called ballistas, out of staves and elastic bands in order to fire water-filled sponges at the opposing team.
They also made cardboard ovens in which they cooked pitta pockets. We made use of the camp site’s outdoor swimming pool which, despite being rather cold was quite pleasant given the weather.
At lunchtime, the Cubs were joined by 17 Beavers (the youngest age group) for an afternoon of lots of fun including a circus workshop and craft, which included making juggling balls, balancing clowns, balloon modelling and face-painting.
Campfire songs
After dinner, we invested four new Cubs at our campfire and taught the Beavers and Cubs some new campfire songs and included some of their favourites, after which the Beavers headed back to the HQ in Arthur Road for a sleepover.
The Cubs continued the evening with a wide game followed by a game of bingo, ending the evening with hot chocolate and cake.
Sunday was the hottest day of the weekend, but they managed to have a try at archery and climbing before lunch, followed by time to play in the woods before spending their money in the tuck shop and being collected by their parents, who were desperate to get home to watch the England World Cup match.
Thanks to all the other Leaders and Cub Parents who helped in so many ways to make the weekend possible.
