Alien invasion 30/05/11

Keep your eyes open for an aggressive superweed that can can burst through tarmac and concrete, causing costly damage to pavements, roads and buildings, says MARY-JANE JEANES.

Japanese knotweed is a highly invasive species which is difficult to eradicate once it has become established.

Its roots can break up concrete and do loads of damage. It often grows beside roads and railways.

There is knotweed growing beside Bushey Road beside the former RSA sports field and also some plants have been seen on West Barnes Lane, near the Beverley brook.

I suggest everyone keeps an eye open for it and, in particular, checks their gardens. Here is a simple line drawing:
