Flower power: Members of the pack help water the planters

Following a generous grant of £250 awarded by B&Q under its One Planet Living scheme, the 22nd Wimbledon cub pack has been working hard towards its Global Conservation Badge over the past few weeks to brighten up and encourage wildlife to the grounds of the headquarters located in Arthur Road, Motspur Park.

Among other things, the cubs have converted an old trailer into a mobile vegetable patch, in which they are growing basil, carrots, courgettes, mange tout, salad leaves, French beans and runner beans (yes, it’s quite a big trailer).

Away from the trailer, the cubs are also growing potatoes.

The pack has also installed a pond area and created two log stacks to try to encourage wildlife to the field.

Brighter fences

To brighten up the outside area, the cubs have been fence painting (or should that be cub painting, with some paint getting on the fence despite the protective overalls?).

They have been planting shrubs donated by the Woodland Trust and have moved wood chips around the field to preserve the water around the shrubs.

The cubs have also been busy planting flowers in tubs around the outside of their HQ and have started a sunflower competition.

Recycling

To help them and everyone who uses their hall think about recycling, they have set up a recycling scheme for hall users to separate their rubbish so that the cubs can recycle this at the Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Fields recycling facilities – while picking up litter on the way.

The 22nd Wimbledon pack is hoping that some of the vegetables will be ready for its week away when 21 cubs are being taken to West Sussex at the end of July.
