Report by organiser Sarah McAlister
We raised just over £250 for Mothers’ Union charities on Saturday, 12 February, 2011, at Holy Cross Church hall.
Many thanks are due to all the helpers on the day and especially to the exhibitors, Pat Strachan for bringing in her pottery and to Ivy Ollard who showed us the beautiful Faberge eggs that she made and several bouquets of handmade flowers made from sugar paste, which she demonstrated on the afternoon.
Lots of people had a trying-on session with the hats and enjoyed posing with their friends.
Our (nearly) famous cake sale almost sold out and I must thank the baking ladies from the Mother’s Union for their generous donations
Piano accompaniment
Afternoon tea wouldn’t have been complete without Josie Dovey’s piano accompaniment and we couldn’t have had better at The Ritz. Thank you, Josie.
Mothers’ Union charities are mostly small projects helping families around the world. Here are some examples.
Worldwide: teaching uneducated women to read, who are then trained (and funded) to pass on this knowledge to other women in their community so they aren’t ripped off in their everyday dealings, providing transport for community nurses in remote parts of Africa, sending emergency aid when a natural disaster strikes.
Closer to home
UK projects: these include holding contact sessions that enable estranged Dads to have contact with their children in a semi-supervised environment, providing practical support to the families of prisoners.
In Southwark: enabling troubled families to have a short holiday or break away when their doctor/health visitor/priest recommends this to ease family tensions and stresses.
At Holy Cross: the knitting wool for tiny cardigans, caps, mittens and cot blankets for premature babies in the neonatal unit at St George’s Hospital, Tooting.
We plan to have another craft exhibition in September, so look out for the date!
